Schutzhund is German for "protection dog". This is a sport that developes and evalutes the traits in dogs that make them more useful and happier companions to their owners. Schutzhund measures the dog's mental stability, endurance, ability to scent, willingness to work, courage, and trainability. Dogs of any breed, even mixes, can compete in Schutzhund today, but the most common breeds are German Shepherds, Belgain Malinois, Rottweilers, Dobermans, Giant Schnauzers, American Bulldogs, Boxers, and the like.
There are three schutzhund titles: Schutzhund 1 (SchH1), Schutzhund 2 (SchH2), Schutzhund 3 (SchH3). SchH1 is the first title and SchH3 is the most advanced. Additionaly, before a dog can compete for a SchH1, he must pass a temperament test called a BH (Begleithundprüfung, which translates as "traffic-sure companion dog test").
